Default 2007-2008 Chess Rule Changes?

Hey, I was wondering if there have been any changes to the game of chess since the new year of 2008. Or any recent years maybe 2007. There are always some things that can be made better, maybe some chess rules they thought are one of them.

I do not think there could be any rule changes in the terms of the game's mechanics. If any changes have been brought forth, then it may only be in regards for set up, location of the board, lighting, and maybe time limits. The game can not change too much. I have not heard of any changes yet.

I think there was one change made in the last 100 years to allow pawns that reach b8 and g8 to promote, because before then those 2 pawns could not promote on those squares.

There is an opportunity for the FIDE Laws to be changed every four years. The current version dates from July 2005. Possible changes will be discussed later this year (actually this process is already underway), and those made will presumably take effect from sometime in 2009.

There have been no changes to the basic mechanics of the game (moves of the pieces etc) since around the early 19th century. There have been several minor changes to draw claim rules at various times, and of course there are frequent changes to rules governing time limits, clocks, behaviour, illegal moves, blitz rules, mobile phones etc.

Stuff like lighting is really not covered in the Laws, except that the arbiter is required to ensure "a good playing environment".

Kevin,

Please let me genuinely commend you on what I believe to be your best post to date on OzChess (quoted above). Good job.

Best Regards,

AO
