I suppose some sporting events get publicly funded. But chess isn't an active activity which reduces childhood obesity. So it therefore doesn't deserve funding on par with sports like rugby.

Mental rugby does not reduce childhood obesity. For instance, a recent chess club newsletter had me thinking this issue is perhaps more of a problem in chess circles than previously believed.
