Optus should be quicker than Bigpond/Telstra as Optus normally take a more direct route (ie their cable heads East out of Sydney) however I believe BP/T still use a cable that leaves Perth and then goes via Japan to get to USA. Where the Optus one seems to be slowing down is the large number of relatively slow backbone connections it is using once it gets to the states. Looking at the trace route info CC on the other hand have the advantage of hanging directly off the Optus backbone. |

I just did a snapshot comparison of OzChess and Chess Chat. OzChess currently has 18 members logged in right now, and Chess Chat has 26.
I am thinking that this may well be a better measure of which forum is most popular with Australian chess players. The post per day statistics, which has seen OzChess soar in recent months, really doesn't provide a very good indication of anything. For instance, if there are two posters having a lively debate about whether God exists or not, and they keep conversing with one another, it could easily add 20 posts to a forum's daily post count - and yet none of those posts would have had anything to do with chess. Likewise, measuring the number of guests is also inaccurate as a measure for forum popularity because many guests are robots such as Googlebots (and the vBulletin software doesn't make it easy to distinguish these from real people). As such, members logged in becomes one of the more tangible and truer measures of a forum's popularity. Poster base (the number of posters who made at least one post in the past month) is also a good measure. In fact, in this respect, just days ago I announced OzChess' poster base to be about 62. Bill and/or Kevin stated that Chess Chat's was nearly twice this size yet they presented no evidence of either how they calculated this (they don't have Cyb Advanced Statistics installed on their forum like we do), nor did they state what their exact number was. This ducking of the issue makes their claim seem a little far fetched and quite unbelievable. Perhaps we can chalk it up to mere desperation as they realize Chess Chat's supremacy as Australia's most popular chess forum is slipping away (and them being helpless to stop the slide). Lastly, Google ranking would seem to be the last accurate measure of a forums popularity, and in this respect OzChess slightly outperforms Chess Chat for most chess search terms.

What about total post views in a time period? Is that a stat that is readily obtained.

Unfortunately not. The best that we can do is see which members have viewed a thread, and presumably the posts in the thread. This ability is not one they have on CC because it required a special mod to be installed to achieve this.

Perhaps its just a bug or gremlin in the system Bill. In any event what do you think about our nifty new detach shoutbox - 500 shout display feature (aka - the real reason for your post today.)

You were previously uninterested in our member numbers as well as our guest numbers. Now you just use it to add a smoke screen to the slow death of Chess Chat under your captaincy. We can only hope that you do the right thing and go down with the ship.
