Thumbs up OzChess Championships

Hey guys I think it's time we have a wholesite championships where the winner gains the title of ozchess champion!

Now this thread is mainly for ideas and to see interest so please share any thoughts.

The matches could be 5 minute, 10 minute, allegro, all of the above, maybe even corro. that would be up to everyones decision.

We could organise it in a few ways, some one on one matches world championship style, a knockout tourney (with 3 lives/chances perhaps), a round robin or double round robin or of course a swiss.

Or even a combination where it starts as a round robin and the top 4 (depending on number of entrants) play off (1 vs.4 and 2vs.3) in a 10 match series and then the winners play off in a 15 match series to make it exciting, who knows!

The games would be held mainly on ICC but if a compettitor was unable to do this then it would be nice if some ICC faithfuls gave FICS a go just for the game

EDIT: I forgot to mention I'd be more then happy to organise it all if there was no other interest in organising

Thanks guys,
Jaydon

There was an ICC - MCC - Ozchess tournament once. Free accounts were up on offer. Firegoat7 put it together and it was was of our finest moments!

Sounds like fun!

I would like to point out that correspondence will probably NOT work. Look at the Internet Correspondence tourney. Games are just getting to the 15th move area, one site dropped out, and it started the middle of March!

Yes you do have a good point I was only throwing that in just in case but yes if there was to be a corro. it would have to be for a site corro. championship...

Alright how about I propose a layout for the tournament and we can go from there.

I Propose a triple round robin where a 5 minute game, a 10 minute game and a 15 minute game are played against every player.

The top 4 or top 8 at the end of this then progress to the next stage where either (if 8) 1vs.8 2vs.7 3vs.6 4vs.5 and the same idea if only 4 players (1vs.4 2vs.3) These players will then play 4- 15 minute games where the winner progresses, if it is even then 3- 5 minute games will be played, if a winner is still not decided then there will be one final 5 minute game where the colours will be chosen randomly; this will be continued until somebody wins (if 8 players progress then this will be repeated once down to 4 players)

Then for the final it will be a 10 game series of 4 - 15 minutes 3- 10 minutes and 3 - 5 minutes. If even after this then 3 5 minute games will be played, if by some miracle still even (which would be pretty exciting even if slightly painful) then they will keep playing single 5 minute games until somebody wins.

All games will be played on ICC, if no account then go for a trial account and disclose the name of the account to each opponent).

Note this is only the frameworks and the point of this is for you guys to show any errors or room for improvement. Also it would be nice if all games were put in a thread as they're finished

thanks

Maybe someone could make a trial account for you on their computer, but I guess it probably would be easier to play on FICS or some other website

We tried that already, it doesn't work unless you use it on your computer. If you try to log in elsewhere it will give an identity error or something.

Hmm ok that's annoying.. We don't really have many options, people who verse you are just going to have to play on FICS I guess.. Unless you pay for an account!!

By the way any thoughts on the structure mentioned above?

I think the structure is good, except it depends on how many people play in the tournament, as a triple round robin would take too long with a lot of people. If there is a lot of players maybe a group knockout, like the FIFA world cup, or if less then a single or double round robin
