Box Hill Chess Club/Canterbury Juniors CC
Club President’s message – Gladys Liu
2007 has been a fruitful year for the Box Hill Chess Club.
Core events and Open Day
We have successfully fulfilled our regular commitments set for the year which include our well received tournaments on the Tuesday, Friday and Weekend Calendars. The first ever Chess Open Day hosted by the Club in March attracted more than 150 guests and good media coverage. The Open Day also boosted the number of interested juniors in our coaching sessions and new classes had to be created on Sunday to cater for the increased demand.
Vic Open, Vic Junior and Our Elite Juniors
In June and July, Box Hill Chess Club had the honor to host the Victorian Chess Open and the Victorian Junior Chess Championships. Both events had recorded a significant attendance of strong players and an exhibition of exciting games. A number of our elite juniors including Chris Wallis, Zhigen Lin, Eugene Schon, Lawrence Matheson, Sally Yu and Derek Yu had represented Australia in a number of international competitions this year.
Reaching Out
During the year, the committee of the Box Hill Chess Club has endeavored to extend our service to people with disability, senior citizens and causal chess players. Posters were displayed in local shopping strips and invitations were sent to local Rotaries and Lions to encourage people join our social chess sessions on Friday nights and Sunday afternoons.
55th Anniversary Celebration
Two weeks ago, we celebrated our 55th Anniversary in style. A Birthday party was held at our club venue with special guests Robert Clark MP (Member for Box Hill), Gary Wastell (President of Australian Chess Federation), Neil and Mary Affect (from our landlord Canterbury Masons), sponsors, coaches, media, members and their family and friends.
Committee
I would like to thank the hard working committee, Rolf Exner, Howard Liston, Kerry Lyall, Laurie Dalton, David Schneider for their support. A special thank you to our Club Captain Gerry Hartland for keeping the Club in good shape, our Treasurer Trevor Stanning for ensuring a healthy balance, our very capable Secretary Rachel Siah and a person I can call on anytime David Flude.
The Year Ahead
In order to take the Club to a new height, great talents, new bloods and more hands are needed. I am extremely grateful that George Zaprodsky and Greg Matheson have joined the committee of the Canterbury Junior Chess Club.
Box Hill Chess Club’s AGM will be conducted in the early part of 2008. I invite you to consider joining the committee and to work together in bringing greater results to our Club and those who love chess.
Have a lovely Christmas and a successful and prosperous New Year.
Gladys Liu
