BOX HILL CHESS CLUB 55th Birthday Celebration

When the Committee first considered holding a celebration to mark our 55th anniversary of formation the key question was, “Will anyone come to a Chess Club Birthday Celebration?”
Leading up to the day of the celebration, Sunday the 16th of December 2007, there was some nervous organisers as interest was not apparently overwhelming.
However, the enthusiasm of our energetic President, Gladys Liu, is contagious and a good crowd arrived at 5pm to be greeted by fresh seafood salads, hot pizzas, and drinks. Quickly the many juniors settled into playing the social TRANSFER and BLITZ, while seniors such as Scott Sharman, David Flude, Roger Croft, Elliott Renzies, Marcus Raine, Trevor Stanning, and Laurie Dalton played more sedate styles of chess and debated the merits of chess variants.
A definite attraction was a couple of GO players who challenged Derek Yu and Chris Wallis in this Asian board-game, and showed that there is a lot to be learned in the deceptively simple game.
6pm came and it was time for speeches. (And in the background, time for Rachel Siah to order another delivery of pizzas as the good turnout had made short work of the first order).
Gladys highlighted the success of Box Hill CC in the chess community and the blossoming of the Canterbury Juniors Chess Club, which was supported in its formative years by Box Hill.
Gerrit Hartland gave a full history of significant occasions for the Box Hill club.
Gary Wastell, President of the Australian Chess Federation, spoke in appreciation of the teamwork by the Box Hill Committee over many years.
Robert Clark, local State Parliamentary member, said he appreciated how significant it was for a voluntary organisation, such as a chess club, to still be going strong after 55 years.
Then it was time for Gladys to introduce the piece de resistance’, a special cake with the decorations having a chess-board theme, topped by fruit pieces dripped in chocolate and carved as chess pieces. Of course we sang the happy birthday song.
My favourite part of the day was the unveiling of a brand-new honour-board to record Box Hill Chess Club champions and presidents. It is a mighty sight and our thanks to the donors who supported the fund-raising earlier in the year.
I spoke with Elliott Renzies after the ceremonies and he said he had a tear in his eye during the speeches.
A tear of joy at being part of a lovely social occasion.
It was time for farewells and best wishes at 8.30pm.
Well-done Gladys and Rachel and their helpers.
