First post, nice to meet you all!
I've only started playing chess regularly again recently, and have been confronted by what looks like the start of a hippo defence (i am white).
1. e4 g6
I'm assuming its the hippo as he looks to fianchetto his bishop, and he mentioned reading about it the other week.
For those unfamiliar with the Hippo in question (as I understand there are several variations) he would hope to fianchetto both bishops like in pic below (pure hippo)
I've found a lot of info on how great the hippo is and how underrated it is a defence, but not much info on how to stop black getting into such a strong position.
Does anyone have any tips, traps or suggestions?
I've been thinking of setting up a King side fianchetto and advancing my pawn to e5. This would stop his fianchetto (as I could take his bishop g2 > b7) but hinders my normal development.
Thoughts?
