Yeah things are quite bad in the US. They recently announced guidelines for its citizens on how to spot a terrorist. For example people who criticize the government and talk about the constitution are all potential terrorists by that document. It is so obvious what they are trying to do - they want to do bad decisions without people criticizing them, without uprisings, revolts etc.
If you could pay for your food in the stores only with the microchip, imagine what power government would have over you. Someone reports you might be a terrorist and your microchip gets turned off and you are left with no money to buy anything. You will die just because you dared to question the authority. Because of the fear, rarely anybody will. Government can pretty much do anything at that point.
I doubt there will ever be such a thing as a completely cashless society.
