Well DB won the match overall but at the time Kasparov wasn't the best human available to play the machine. Even though he was world chess champion at the time, the ex word champion Karpov had a style of play that was regarded as being far superior against chess computers. And in 97 when the match took place, Karpov was world #2 and still playing great top flight chess.
