Coming EVENTS to our venue at 3 Rochester Rd Canterbury.
1) Canterbury Summer SWISS is now scheduled for Saturday 27 December to Tuesday December 30 2008. This is one day shorter than previously announced, and the change is made to give juniors a chance to travel to the Australian Junior Championship which starts in Adelaide in the first week of 2009. Flyers of our event are available at our Club.
Entries are starting to roll-in for this December event. Liam Hamilton, and the Daltons (Laurie, Mischa, Sam, Joshua) were first off the mark. David Hacche participated in the recent Victorian Championship and has now signed up for our December event.
The event is 8 rounds over 27/12, 28/12, 29/12, 30/12.

2) December Rookies is Sunday 14/12/2008. This is the final Rookies and Queens for the year and, for juniors, the last chance to get their name on the 2008 trophies. Most juniors will have finished exams by this date and we expect a terrific turn-out of strong juniors. The Rookies trophies are sponsored by zedChess, a coaching organisation directed by George Zaprudsky. George’s generous sponsorship, right through 2008, is appreciated by the Canterbury Juniors Chess Club.
One of us is in the Olympics
The Chess Olympiad is currently being held in Dresden, Germany.
Australian has sent both a mens team and a womens team to this huge event. The Australian mens team includes Darryl Johansen who is a member of the Box Hill Chess Club, and who recently represented Canterbury Juniors Chess Club in the Victorian Winter INTERCLUB series.
The best place to read about the chess Olympiad results is the blog of Amiel Rosario, a Sydney based chess player who is an accredited press agent in Dresden. His blog is at The Closet Grandmaster
So far he has live-blogged three days of the Olympiad, and has posted many pictures that will let you see how the event is presented.
The Friday Xmas Swiss
This event started Friday the 14th of November and a good crowd of 60 entries is one of our best turn-outs for the year. It promises to be a hard fought event with Kempen, Wallis, Lindberg, Cheng, and Saw among the top seeds. You are assured of very even games in this event as the competition is divided into divisions (groups of 8 for the top four divisions). Provisional pairings for this event are posted (usually on Saturday night) on the OzChessbulletin board > Events at Box Hill Chess Club. (Use the default SKIN not the AQUATEEN skin for reading pairings at this site. <Go to the home-page for the site and choose DEFAULT skin in the low left hand corner>).
Sunday coaching notes
Term 4 Sunday coaching are now well on the way with David Hacche taking the elite Sunday morning group during Darryl’s absence. The attendance is reasonable; but there is room for a few more.

The Sunday afternoon classes, coached by a group consisting Rukman, Derek, Rengan, and Jason, are just making their way with many places still open.
This session is good value for parents now that we have received a generous grant from Boroondara council and the Rotary club of Balwyn.
The scheme will be viable in 2009.
Good news for novice players in the vicinity.
