Report on the October ROOKIES.
The crowd really built up just before start-time 12.30 and caused a little delay to the start. A wonderful field of 62 players included many for the first time, and also a strong adult top end which included Victorian Championship players Ascaro Pecori and Carl Gorka.
The Queens Cup was won for October by Charlotte Dilnutt, which was only appropriate given her mum had organised repairs to the trophy earlier in the day. The Rookies Cup was won by Nicholas Lui who has won some previous monthly events; Anurag Sannnidhanam pressed closely for second in group J1
QUEENS Charlotte Dilnutt 1st, Savithri Narenthran 2nd,
ROOKIES Nicholas Liu 1st, Anurag Sannidhanam 2nd,
J2 Gene Lai and Ian Yeong, on cb from Ruben Nowak, Joshua Devrajah, Joash Arulprakasam,
J3 Deniz Tuncer and Zachary Loh
J4 Euan Reid and Dinesh Arulprakasam
J5 Thomas Oliver 1st, Stephen Liu 2nd
Adults Ascaro Pecori and David Flude
Thanks
To Mike Loh who has checked and repaired many digital clocks for us.
To Toni Ziffer who ran the canteen on the Rookies Day. Toni is a chess coach active in Schools; her company is called Chess RULES. Their next open event is a TRANSFER EVENT.........
To Roger Croft who has helped with the set-up of the Club boards/sets/clocks, and then proceeded to have an exceptional run of wins in many rounds of the Rookies tournament.
Coming EVENTS to our venue at 3 Rochester Rd Canterbury.
1) Bendigo Bank Chess championship 1 Nov. (2 rounds), 2 Nov. (2 rounds), 3 Nov. (1 evening round), 4 Nov. (2 rounds this is Cup Day)
This event is the largest event for the remainder of 2008. It is organised by the Elwood Chess Club but because of difficulties with their usual venue they have moved to our venue this year. It represents a one-off opportunity to play in this top event and be close to home. Early bird discounts available until October 30.
2) Canterbury Summer SWISS is now scheduled for Saturday 27 December to Tuesday December 30 2008. This is one day shorter than previously announced, and the change is made to give juniors a chance to travel to the Australian Junior Championship which starts in Adelaide in the first week of 2009. Flyers of our event are available at our Club.
